Histologic Features
- A fibrinous crust overlying the ulcer
- Ulcerations into the upper dermis with extensive degeneration of collagen
- A dense, diffuse infiltrate extending into the subcutis, consisting of mostly neutrophils, some lymphocytes and histiocytes
- Extensive extravasation of red blood cells
- Marked leukocytoclasis
- Necrotic blood vessels and degenerated collagen in the exudate
- Clusters of basophilic coccal bacteria in the exudate
